Rec Baseball 2025 In Review

The 2025 rec baseball season was wet and wild. We started out in early April to some rough spring weather that did not stop the young players in their tracks. At the Quickball level (4-5 year olds) we had 6 enthusiastic coaches take the lead after helping with a fun ice breaking clinic at Cross Farm. The event attracted a much larger group than last year in an encouraging sign for the future. Special shout out to Alyssa Daughtry for taking the lead as league president to organize the young group.

At the Rookie level (5-6 year olds), we had another group of 6 enthusiastic coaches lead our group. Very exciting and competitive players at this level, including some players wearing sliding mitts and swinging some big bats. Way to go Rookies!

At the Minors level (7-8 year olds) we had 4 strong teams take on each other at the kid-pitch level. Organized and run by David Del Vecchio, league president, there were nothing but rave reviews from all involved.

Moving up to the Major 1 group consisting of 3rd and 4th graders (9-10 year olds) we had 3 town teams along with teams from Hazlet – the first time this age group combined with an outside town to form the league. Playing both at the great Phillips Park and on the Hazlet fields the season went as smoothly as possible. Organized by the Jodi Valla, the group could not have had more fun. Playing in the Championship game on Saturday June 14th at Phillips Park got off to a misty start between the Mets and the Pirates. It was a back and forth battle that came down to a close play at the plate, with the Pirates edging past the Mets 6-5. Congratulations Pirates.

In Major 2 (11-12 year olds), this season’s teams brought out some big hitters. It was home runs, stealing bases and fast ball strikeouts galore. Although all teams experienced some rain, the players did not disappoint. The championship game between the Yankees and Dodgers was postponed to Fathers Day due to rain.

The Dodgers got there by upsetting the Mets in the first round of the playoffs. Even throughout the rain delayed start, the Yankees showed their strength and eventually overwhelmed the Dodgers 7-3. A strong pitching and defensive performance earned them the trophy as 2025 Champs from Major 2.

Recreation Baseball 2024 in Review

By Aiden Colie, Recreation Baseball Commissioner

A beautiful sunny day marked “Championship Saturday” on June 15, as the 2024 Recreation Baseball and Quickball seasons came to a close. Trophies and medals were handed out and each league closed out their season with a final game or other baseball related activity.

The games featured players’ names being announced at the beginning and with each at bat, as “Walk-up” music selected by the players blasted as they strode to the plate.

Our 3rd and 4th graders in Major1 played an action-packed All-Star Game. Coaches Delvecchio and Fokas led a team against Coaches Libecci and Harrison. It was a heated game with a tie score going into the last inning. Danny Collins was the winning pitcher. David Sellinger drove in Andrew Kimball for the winning run. The winning run was scored with 2 outs giving the Delvecchio/Fokas team the win in a 6-5 nail biter!

Delvecchio/Fokas won the all-star game.

Some notable shout outs include Thomas Ploussas and JJ Fokas of Delvecchio/Fokas, and Chase Lin and  Kyle Schleif, catcher of Libecci/Harrison.

Next up was the Major2 Championship Game featuring the #1 seed Mets hosting the 2nd-seeded Yankees in what seems like an annual affair.  Ace pitching started with Avery Tomba and continued with Drew Bryceland, Robbie Krol III, who made his season debut in the final game, and Dylan Dietz, who came in to close the game in 1-2-3 fashion. They were all helped by stellar defense which turned not one, but two double plays to keep the always aggressive on the basepaths Met's to only 3 runs.

The Yankees always seemed to have runners on base, despite several great innings by the Mets’ pitching/defense to secure a few scoreless innings.  The Yankees successfully broke through, plating 6 runs in total, enough to secure the victory for the 2024 season.

Between games, we had two ceremonies.  First we recognized and thanked Mauricio Leal for his generous donation of our beautiful covered dugouts on both of the Phillips fields.  Anyone who has played or coached at Phillips  over the past few years has experienced the Leal/Gambino family’s generosity keeping us all comfortably out of the elements on hot or rainy days.

We also had a ceremony to dedicate the new flagpole in centerfield on Phillips Lower.  The flagpole was the Eagle Scout project for Grant Lind with help from his fellow scouts in Troup 130, and generous donations from the community.

The grand finale for the day was the always popular Holmdel Adult Home Run Derby!  As usual, a lot of balls went flying out of Phillips Park. The three top dinger hitters made it to the final round, which was hard-fought and exciting.  After the leaders launched even more home runs, we finally had our winner and 2nd and 3rd place:

1st Place:  Anthony Vella

2nd Place: David Katz

3rd Place: David Farkas

Many thanks to everyone who made this season such a great experience for our kids:
