The HYAA wrestling program provides developmental instruction for beginners while also preparing older and more experienced wrestlers for high school. Here in Holmdel the program has grown significantly over the past few years with a total of 86 kids this year compared to 57 in 2019. Much of this growth is in Kindergarten through 2nd grades with 50 kids alone. The number of children warranted that the program split into 2 sessions. One being developmental or “Devo” where the kids focused on the basics, and the 2nd session being older and more experienced kids. Due to the amount of children in the program and the wide range of experience levels we participate in 2 leagues, Mid-Jersey K-6th and Jersey Shore K-8th.
This season two newer wrestlers, 4th grader Yuyang Gao (60 pounds) and 3rd grader Michael Motherway (52), both came in 2nd place at the Mid Jersey end of the year individual tournament. Such a great accomplishment and confidence builder!
The Jersey Shore League team came in 2nd place with an impressive record of 10-1 in the regular season. 6 of the wrestlers accomplished an undefeated season and were crowned champions at the individual tournament at the end of the season. 6th graders: Colton Cortese (64 pounds), Logan Placca (80), 7th grader Christian Reyes (95), 8th graders Dylan Placca (100), Nicholas Paulino (107), and Michael Todisco (122). 7th grader Michael Paulino (90) came in 2nd. Other impressive records include Yuyang Gao, Michael Motherway, Michael Paulino and John Gann with 10 plus wins.
